Customizing Your EMR Note Settings with the Magic Wand Feature in Comprehend

Customizing Your EMR Note Settings with the Magic Wand Feature

The Magic Wand feature allows you to customize your note output using real examples from your past documentation. By analyzing these examples, it learns your preferred style, tone, and structure—helping generate notes that match how you naturally document.

(This video is in WebPT, but it is the same steps for all EMR users)

Why Use the Magic Wand

The Magic Wand simplifies customization by learning directly from your examples. This means:

  • Output matches your real documentation style
  • Formatting stays consistent
  • Setup is quick and easy
  • You can refine results over time

Best Practice: Do This at Setup

Configure your Magic Wand instructions during your initial setup of Comprehend AI — before you start using it for live notes. Starting with well-trained instructions means your AI is accurate and useful from day one, rather than requiring corrections after the fact.

Before You Begin

Make sure you have:

  • At least 3 high-quality examples from past notes
  • Access to your EMR and the Comprehend extension
  • Examples that reflect your preferred format and level of detail
  • 5–10 minutes to complete setup and review results

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Open Your Note

Log in → Open the note you want to customize

2. Launch Comprehend + Add Example

Create visit → Open section dropdown → Show ExamplesAdd an Example

Paste a full, high-quality note example

3. Build Your Example Set

Add at least **3 real **(and different) examples

4. Generate Instructions (Magic Wand)

System creates instructions based on your examples

5. Confirm Overwrite

Click Confirm to proceed

6. Review Output

Adjust by adding more examples if needed

7. Test with Comprehend

Run Comprehend → Review results

Check tone, structure, and detail

8. Refine Over Time

Add edge case examples

Rerun Magic Wand as needed

Use Learn feature in EMR for small improvements

Important Notes

  • Once you confirm changes, they cannot be undone
  • Always use examples relevant to the section you’re customizing
  • If results aren’t quite right, add more examples and try again

Tips for Efficiency

  • Gather your examples before starting
  • Use a mix of patient scenarios for better coverage
  • Customize each note type separately if needed
