Comprehend Can't Hear You? Steps to Test & Fix Microphone Access

🎤 Troubleshooting: Comprehend Isn’t Recording Me / Microphone Not Working

If Comprehend isn’t picking up your voice during a visit, follow these quick steps to get things working again. Most issues are caused by microphone access settings or external audio devices.

âś… 1. How Comprehend Uses Your Microphone

Comprehend uses your computer’s microphone to transcribe your visit in real time. It works directly from the browser, using our extension. If the extension doesn't have access to your microphone hear, it won’t be able to fill out your note.

âś… 2. Make Sure Your Microphone Is Unmuted

  • Check if your mic is muted by pressing F8 (this is a mute/unmute key on many keyboards and headsets).
  • If using a headset, lapel mic, or AirPods, make sure they're connected and functioning.
  • **If wanting to use your computer's microphone please disconnect from Bluetooth **

✅ 3. Using your computer’s microphone

  • Make sure your computer is set to use its built-in microphone and speakers.

âś… 4. Check Chrome Microphone Permissions

Comprehend runs in Chrome, so it must be allowed to use your mic:

  1. Click the puzzle piece icon (Extensions) at the top-right of Chrome.
  2. Find Comprehend, then click the three vertical dots next to it.
  3. Select “View Web Permissions.”
  4. Under Microphone, make sure it's set to “Allow.”

đź’» 4. Check System Microphone Access Settings

On Mac:

  1. Open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone.
  2. Make sure Chrome is toggled ON.
  3. If it’s not listed, try restarting Chrome or reinstalling the Comprehend extension.
  4. Upon reinstallation, allow microphone access

On Windows:

  1. Open Settings > Privacy > Microphone.
  2. Make sure Microphone access is ON.
  3. Scroll down to “Allow apps to access your microphone” and make sure Chrome is listed and enabled.

🛠️ 5. Restart Chrome and Try Again

Sometimes permissions don’t kick in until Chrome is fully restarted. Close all tabs and relaunch the browser.

🧪 Still Not Working?

If you’ve gone through all the above and it’s still not working, try:

  • Recording a voice memo using your default mic to confirm it works.
  • Switching to your built-in laptop mic (temporarily disconnect Bluetooth devices).
  • Reinstalling the Comprehend Chrome Extension from our installation link.
  • Make sure microphone is not muted! You can unmute by clicking F8
